  4.     A few years ago TIME, like much of the English-language press,
  5. began shifting to the Pinyin system for transliterating Chinese
  6. characters. Thus Peking became Beijing, Canton became Guangzhou and
  7. Mao Tse-tung became Mao Zedong. Why then, readers wondered, did we
  8. have a reference to Peking University in our June 5 issue? The
  9. answer is that the university itself, for the sake of continuity,
  10. has opted to retain the traditional English spelling.
