LETTERS, Page 8Tradition Retained
A few years ago TIME, like much of the English-language press,
began shifting to the Pinyin system for transliterating Chinese
characters. Thus Peking became Beijing, Canton became Guangzhou and
Mao Tse-tung became Mao Zedong. Why then, readers wondered, did we
have a reference to Peking University in our June 5 issue? The
answer is that the university itself, for the sake of continuity,
has opted to retain the traditional English spelling.
